Rebecca Recommends - Books n' More

I often recommend books on various topics to my clients.  Some of my favorites!

The Miracle of Bio-Identical Hormones 2nd Edition - Michael Platt, MD
One of the best books I've read on the subject of natural hormones.  When we think of using bioavialable hormones we usually think of women entering menopause, but read here to see how low progesterone levels affect men, women, and children; why progesterone levels are trending lower and lower in the general population; how low progesterone is linked to cancers of many kinds, type 2 diabetes, weight problems, depression, and even ADD/ADHD.  Further, a very pleasant read, as Dr. Platt moves from case to fascinating case.  Many of my clients have told me they couldn't put it down once they got started.

The Schwarzbein Principle - The eyes of endocrinologist Schwarzbein were opened when she began working with type 2 diabetics.  What she discovered, to her surprise, was that the standard diet prescribed by The American Diabetic Association was actually making diabetics more...well...diabetic and causing other health problems, as well!  Read here to find how returning her patients to a wholesome, traditional, and satisfying diet brought so many of her patients back to health.  Follow this link - she has a second book, you'll see, and a wonderful cookbook I highly recommend.

Let's Have Healthy Children - Adelle Davis - Here it is!  This is the book I read as a teenager (my mother's copy) that spawned my interest in and passion for profoundly affecting health through nutrition - food!  Later, when I was pregnant with our daughter Krista, I followed the advice found in this book with almost obsessive discipline.  All I can say is that I have absolutely no regrets; Krista was and is everything Adelle said she should be if her guidance was followed.  Why find "natural" ways later to find solutions to problems that can be prevented in the first place?  If you are pregnant or - even better - considering a pregnancy, then this is MUST reading for you!  What you do for your child during the preconception period and pregnancy will result in the constitution of your child's health - something that will last a lifetime!  While you can improve a poor constitution somewhat using nutritional strategies once the child is born, you will never at any later time be able to improve his or her fundamental constitution of health.  Conversely, if you provide your child with a robust constition through diet during the preconception time and pregnancy, nutritional mistakes later in life - while perhaps having a temporary negative effect - will not be able to change the basic and fundamental constitution of good health.  Want to eat carelessly for nine months and spend the next sixteen years or so traipsing from one doctor's office to the next, OR would you rather feast yourself on nutritious foods only now and forsake the pharmacy later??

The Coconut Oil Miracle  -  Whoever thought saturated tropical fats could be some of the most healthful eating you could ever add to your diet?  Learn from naturopath Bruce Fife all about the miraculous properties of coconut oil.  Anti-viral, anti-bacterial, supports thyroid function, weight loss and regulation.  The lauric acid in coconut oil is a medium-chain triglyceride.  It's molecular composition is so close to that of the membranes surrounding lipid-coated virus and bacteria that when they encounter one another, the membrane of the invader dissovles, the contents spill out and are killed.  This includes all strains of the herpes virus, HIV, hepatitis-C, aphthous stomatitis, and Streptococcus aureaus, to name just a few.  Coconut oil and foods have been shown to reduce HIV viral lode from sky-high to undetectable.  Ah c'mon, if that's true, then why aren't we making war on disease with this humble nut?  Hint hint:  Big Pharma (lauric acid cannot be patented!)

The Big Book of Recipes for Babies, Toddlers, and Children
I've reviewed several "healthy food" cookbooks for children.  Many of them are very good but fall short, in my opinion, with their misguided emphasis on low-fat varieties of traditional foods, the use of the microwave oven, and MSG-laden ingredients such as boullion cubes.  Of the ones I have taken a close look at, this one really stands out.  Great ideas for lots of child-friendly healthful foods, many of which would be equally enjoyed by those preparing them.  Useful guiding charts based on age are an added bonus.
